CFP: Argumentation and Advocacy Special Issue on Spheres of Argument

Almost thirty years ago, G. Thomas Goodnight developed the view that argument practices should be understood as falling into personal, technical, and public spheres. Goodnight’s essay, published in this journal under its earlier name Journal of the American Forensic Association 18.4 (Spring 1982), has been enormously influential. A focus on argument spheres, especially the relationship between the public and technical spheres, has become one of the dominant topics of argumentation research. In honor of the 30th anniversary of Goodnight’s groundbreaking essay, Argumentation and Advocacy will publish a special issue focused on spheres of argument in its 48.4 (Spring 2012) issue. Essays testing, extending, and building upon Goodnight’s original conception of argument spheres will be considered for publication. Goodnight’s original essay will be reprinted to provide context for this discussion.

Questions about the special issue should be submitted to the guest editor: Robert C. Rowland, Professor, The University of Kansas, rrowland@ku.edu.
