Message from the President:

Dear members of AFA,

In March of 2007, I received a communication from the leadership of the National Communication Association indicating their desire to modify our existing affiliate agreement.  Their communication was part of a larger NCA initiative to begin to treat each of their affiliates in a fair, systematic manner.  The AFA constitution specifies that affiliate agreements can only be changed by a vote of the full membership in our business meeting, so I requested an extension of their April deadline for our response.  My request was granted.

I wanted to bring this issue to your attention because we will vote on the new language at our upcoming business meeting, November 14, 2007 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm at Palmer House PDR 18.  Please make plans to attend.  I look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,

Carol Winkler

Message from  NCA:

The National Communication Association welcomes AFA members to its annual convention in Chicago, November 15-18, 2007, at the Hilton Chicago and the Hilton Palmer House.   NCA policy states that all participants on the program must register for the convention. AFA members who plan to attend the NCA convention after the close of the AFA business meetings and who have not pre-registered can register beginning at 3 pm on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, on the lower level of the Hilton Chicago.   AFA members who do not attend the NCA convention do not need to register with NCA.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

AMERICAN FORENSICS ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Professional Development and Practices Committee of the AFA would like to invite nominations for the AMERICAN FORENSIC ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD.  AFA will present the award at the annual convention in Chicago in 2007.  The  Distinguished Service Award recognizes long-term service to the American forensics community.  The recipient of the award typically comes from within the forensics community (active or retired).  Nominations do not need to be elaborate.  When possible, however, a nomination file may include a letter of nomination and the candidate's vita, indicating service and supporting items.  Areas of interest to the committee might include items such as: positive impact on the field in terms of current research practices, educational practices, community development, and consideration of career as a model for AFA professionals.

Nominations should be sent to:

Professor Doyle Srader

Chair, AFA Professional Development and Practices Committee
